3. How is state sovereignty challenged today?

Activity 1 - What can challenge sovereignty?


Activity Tasks
  1. Examine - Recap on what state sovereignty by reading Slides 1-2 of this Lesson Presentation.
  2. Mind Map - Using the levels of analysis as a framework, brainstorm things that could challenge state sovereignty at each level of analysis. 
  3. Rank - For each level of analysis, rank the threats to state sovereignty from least severe to most severe.
  4. ​Discuss - What are the biggest threats to state sovereignty in the modern world today?

Activity 2 - Researching challenges


Activity Tasks
  1. Define - Examine the following essay question and try to define the key words and command word: “Discuss the impact of NGOs, MNCs and international organizations on State Sovereignty” 
  2. Setup - Divide your class into 4 groups. Each group will research a different contemporary challenge to state sovereignty. Choose between:
    1. Group 1 - How does globalisation pose a challenge to state sovereignty?
    2. Group 2 - How do Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) challenge state sovereignty?
    3. Group 3 - How have Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) challenged state sovereignty?
    4. Group 4 - How do Human Rights challenge state sovereignty?
  3. Note-taking - Each group has an hour to examine their source and to take notes. Use the Cornell Note Taking Method as a way to breakdown the reading.
  4. Debate - In groups discuss the question - What is the most significant challenge to state sovereignty? 

Activity 3 - Writing about challenges


Activity Tasks
  1. Planning - Using your notes on challenges to sovereignty, plan (not write) an essay on the essay question using this essay plan.
  2. Design - Using A3 paper, map out your essay plan by writing the introduction and the first sentence of each body paragraph. Then bullet point the examples, evidence, and analysis points that you will discuss.
  3. Peer Review - Once done, swap A3 essay plans with another group, and add/edit/comment on their plans. Keep swapping after 10 minutes to see all plans.

Activity 4 - Challenges to sovereignty: China


Activity Tasks
  1. Watch - The Chinese government has recently claimed that China’s sovereignty has been challenged by events like the recent protests in Hong Kong. 
  2. Research - In pairs, research news reports and use this worksheet to make notes on how China’s sovereignty may or may not be affected by contemporary world challenges.
  3. Debate - In your opinion, to what extent is China’s sovereignty challenged by contemporary events?
